Modified roots.
- Prop roots (corn) are adventitious,
growing from above-ground stems to provide support.
- Storage roots (beet) store carbohydrates.
- Aerial roots (strangler fig) allow a plant to germinate on a tall object,
then send adventitious roots to the soil.
- Buttress roots (ceiba tree) are also adventitious;
providing support via thick buttresses.
- Pneumatophores (mangroves) project above the water to
obtain oxygen in waterlogged soil of swamps.
