   A growth factor triggers a phosphorylation cascade.

   The  last  kinase  in  the  cascade enters the nucleus and activates a
   transcription factor.
<P>
   This  in  turn stimulates a gene to synthesize an mRNA molecule, which
   then directs the synthesis of a protein in the cytoplasm.
